I have thoughts that scurry through my brain all day long, but the thought I have settled on is that life is a beautiful fight. There are hardships, and emotions, and people. If you believe along the lines of what I believe than the hardships, emotions, and people are all aligned placed on your path through life for a reason by a wonderous Creator. Yesterday I talked about the blessing of people and friends, before that everything has been revolving around my healing and Larry the mid-brain lesion, today I am going to communicate quite an important battle that has ended in victory!
The need for a power wheelchair has arisen; with college soon to come and adulthood on the horizon it is imperative that I am able to navigate more freely and independently. We started the process a year ago with "driving lessons" and picking out the right wheelchair which was a life or death desicion as this wheelchair is like an extension of my body for years to come. I decided on a Quickie Pulse 6. The real trouble started once it was ordered.
Insurance denied it for "being medically nessecary", so my famil and I gathered up my medical records and letters from my neurologist and orthopedist stating why a power chair is now nessecary. Then insurance denied everything but the base of the chair, trying to compromise by saying, "we will pay for the base and you cover everything else". So, we appealed again and got denied for not needing it in the home -- which is offensive because it implies that I am supposed to stay in my home all the time! So we appealed to Sacramento--the head of Californias insurance companies--and… WON!!
I will have my power chair next Friday, April 17. This beautiful battle ends in victory, but it is battle that should have never had to been fought. Imagine being denied the use of your legs…
